RF File Reformat Utility
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
October 1995 - December 1995
The pattern-matching word extraction utilities provided as part of the WORDY
package have one minor flaw, they print word lists *one-across* into files.
This can be awkward and inconvenient for those wishing to print out the word
files onto paper. The RF File Reformat Utility will reformat those word files
for more efficient reading and more economical use of printer paper.
To use the RF File Reformat Utility, type: RF filename (from the DOS
prompt). In just a few seconds, the wordfile will be reformatted in the most
efficient manner [between 5 and 13 columns, depending on the maximum word
length in the file]. This may take as long as a half minute for extremely
long files. Note that this utility is intended for use with the word files
created by the XTRACT, XFIND, INSET, and other pattern-matching utilities
provided with the WORDY package. The use of RF with any other type of files
will produce unpredictable results.
As of version 3.60 or better of WORDY, the RF utility has increased function-
ality. You may now type a third specification on the command line, giving the
maximum, minimum, or exact length of the words in the ReFormatted list. For
example, to RF the file XXXXX.XXX, but to copy only words with exactly five
letters, type: RF XXXXX.XXX =5 (or rf xxxxx.xxx e5). To copy words with
less than five letters, type RF XXXXX.XXX l5. Likewise to copy words with
more than three letters, type RF XXXXX.XXX g5. The "length restriction spec-
ifiers" are: [ = e E ] for EQUAL, [ l L F f U u S s ] for LESS THAN,
[ g G M m O o ] for GREATER THAN. Note that leaving off this specification
when invoking RF lets it return to the default behavior of copying *all* the
words in the original file to the ReFormatted file, as noted in the second
paragraph above.
Additional clarification: You may use any *one* of the above given specifiers
to qualify the length of words copied to the ReFormatted file. As an example,
RF abcdefg.lst =5 RF abcdefg.lst e5 and RF abcdefg.lst E5
ALL HAVE THE SAME RESULT,
to ReFormat the file abcdefg.lst using words only with length exactly equal
to five. RF abcdefg.lst l5 RF abcdefg.lst F5, etc. have the same effect
of ReFormatting the abcdefg.lst file using words with length *less than* five
only. RF abcdefg.lst has the effect of ReFormatting the abcdefg.lst file
and copying over *all* the words in the original. It was not my intention to
complicate things, but to make RF more powerful and flexible. Experiment.
*** WARNING: ***
Once a file has been ReFormatted, the other utilities in the WORDY package,
such as XFIND and XTRACT will no longer work on it. Additionally, it is not
possible to go backwards and easily recreate the original file from the
ReFormatted one. Therefore, before using the RF utility on a word file, make
certain you have a copy of the original file safe on a floppy or in another
subdirectory.
The RF utility is part of the WORDY package. Registration for the *entire*
WORDY package is still only $2.00.
